Why are pop stars considered talented and "musical geniuses" when their music is repetitio

has little harmonic value.? seriously, 3 chords in a verse-chorus-verse etc. song (which has been done....how many times??), no innovation of musical structure (unlike jazz and classical where there is sonata form, rondo, symphony, concerto etc etc).. and popular musicians suck at their instruments. i'm a pianist and yeah, they pretty much suck. not one good pianist. people who know nothing about music shouldn't be qualified to praise them (ahem...grammies!?) okay my rant is done. sorry for that.

Why are pop stars considered talented and "musical geniuses" when their music is repetitious and....?musicals

In the words of the the great Millard T. Phugg, "I was flattered when they called me a genius, until I realized who it was!" Historically however, there have always been forms of music that appeal to the lowest common denominator and there will always be a market for the kind of tune you can hold in your head when your liver is holding ten times that amount in beer. Just because a musician plays popular music however, it doesn't mean they necessarily have no classical background or training! There are a number of fine musicians in the popular music field. The fact that they choose to make millions in the popular arena instead of slugging it out for first place in a genre where most professional musicians have to take teaching jobs to survive as performers, only suggests that they know how to make a living. Every form or genre of music has it's day, and sometimes a few days more. But every new form has it's day too, and only about one percent of any period is ever saved for posterity. Don't forget that for every Beethoven and Haydn, there were a thousand other composers that worked within their own mediocrity and died without leaving their mark on history. Take a step back and look at the big picture, or at least turn off the Clearwater stations for a few days!

i think that the term "music geniuses" many times we relate it with "super special abilities" like wiz kids that can play the instrument like professionals, or draw perfect, or something like that. Well, i think it also has to do with the ability to "GET THE MOST , OUT OF THE LEAST" sometimes the most intelligent person in the world is not necessarily the most practical with solving problems, There is a phrase in art that involves genius with the fact that "less is more" not always the hardest thing to do is the most appreciated and valued and winner. it could only take a few chords and some paintbrushes to make a good piece of art.

And of course there is always a cultural issue, like sports for example, someone with athletic abilities can win more than a very intelligent and dedicated person who goes through a lot to have a good salary, otherrs make more money than othe would make in their life, just by playing a sport. With that cultural cliche, i don't doubt that a lot of artists would go for the entertainment or music business and look for the easiest way to have a descent living. And what looks good, pays good.
It's all about money and connections. Why else do you think PAris Hilton has a CD out.
You are asking the same question many trained musicians ask... I guess... if you were to look at it from a new angle, you certainly don't think they are talented nor do I, at least not at music- but they are great at the gimmick, and selling a cheap imitation as the real thing.

We, you and I (and others!), happen to appreciate a higher form than average Joe Q Public; most people stay there, because that is their comfort zone. If we think about other things outside of music as an analogy, well most people like french onion dip (any old cheap 7-11 brand) others go out and try other things and find that there is much more out there to go on a cracker like fine cheese and caviar. Guess it just depends on if you're willing to explore the unknown.

"I do like green eggs and ham... I DO like them Sam I am"... guess you just need to try it... and guess how many just won't hehe

ah alas... I blame american idol.
For the most part, the modern popular musical landscape is, indeed, littered with talentless souls. You can pick out examples all over the place. The whole genre is a manufactured entity, from the costumes, to the dance routines, to the over-processed vocals.

I don't consider these people to be geniuses, but rather the people who give them their hard earned dollars morons. This is all about what's "cool" not what's good.

There are some pop musicians who actually are proficient, at least in my humble opinion(having played a number of instruments for profit for over 40 years) but y'all would probably laugh at me.

But go ahead and laugh. Christina Aquilera has a great voice, and that's been recognized by people like Herbie Hancock. And Johm Mayer is a superior guitar player.
They are considered musical genii (which is the proper plural of genius) because it is the people who know nothing of music who critique them.

Also...

The songs are very "catchy," meaning they stick in your head. If you listen to something long enough you begin to like it. If it sticks in your head you are "playing" it to yourself. You get the idea.

Most modern music is pathetic, I agree. Why do we listen to it in the first place? One person listens to it, they like it. Their friends, wanting to remain friends, like it because the first person does. They spread it and the cycle continues.

They may have raw talent, but it ends up being incorrectly refined.
well first of all i have never heard anyone calling pop stars musical geniuses and pop actually has a lot of harmony. second, the songs are not composed by the stars themselves but by some musician who gets paid for composing them.

And they are more popular than virtuosos songs because most people dont know anything about music so less complex music is better for them as they can't understand complex one
i agree this world serioulsy needs some talented musicians
I know, but they create catchy songs that everyone gets stuck in their heads. its a conspiracy. pop stars look good, and advertise themselves so much its not funny.r jazz does require actual talent, as does classical. but sometimes classical is just too much, and you don't feel like analysing its genius. same with jazz, some of the time. popular music is there, easy to listen to, but my no means interesting. i prefer to listen to bands that have musical talent, and structure. listen to the cat empire, and listen to their pianist. itll blow you away.
your just jealous LMAO get some talent noob
